On Friday 15th May the Governor of the Isle of Man, Sir Paul Haddacks and his wife Lady Haddacks, paid a visit to Michael district.(See Pictures below) They were met at Michael school by the Chairman of the Commissioners, Mr John Barron and his wife Mrs Ann Barron. Lady Haddacks was presented with a bouquet of flowers by the young grand daughter of the chairman. His exellency was introduced to various members of the commissioners, and also to the Head Teacher of Michael school, Mr Tony Robinson. Mr Robinson showed the party around the school, visiting each class in turn. Later, the pupils and guests gathered in the Community centre of the school to watch a presentation on the work being carried out in Nepal. Michael school has special links with Nepal. After the screening, the children entertained with songs they had learnt, including a particularly good rendition of the school song. After a very enjoyable hour, the party moved on to the new fish hatchery, still under construction, which is situated near the beach close to Glen Wyllin. The party were given a very informative talk about the work of the hatchery, which is owned by an American company and specialises in producing trout eggs which are exported all over the world. This hatchery is the hub of the organisations European distribution network. Next, it was a quick tour around the Glen Wyllin camp site. However, because of the inclement weather, the group did not have an opportunity to walk around the site. Next, it was off to the village church where Peter Kelly gave a very informative talk on the history of the church. This was followed by the vicar, Rev Cyril Rogers, who gave a talk on the unique Celtic crosses which were found in Michael. The next stop was for dinner. The party went to the Mitre Hotel, which is believed to be the oldest public house in the Isle of Man, where they were joined by around 50 members of Michael community. They all enjoyed a buffet lunch served by the landlord and landlady. To round the day off, the party then moved on to Mr East's fantastic collection of motor bikes. Mr East gave a very informative talk about the bikes, which are always kept in immaculate condition and which are ridden regularly. All to soon it was time for his Excellency and Lady Haddacks to take their leave. Despite the rain, everyone had enjoyed the day. How nice it was to see how diverse the activities in Michael are, and what is actually on our doorstep is truly amazing. Some pictures of the visit are attached:
